What you MUST know before buying donor sperm
Advances in reproductive medicine have provided therapeutic options for
individuals wishing to avail themselves of treatment for fertility disorders,
be they due to reasons of medical disorders or personal choice. As part of the
ongoing evaluation process, it is important that clinics periodically review
their performance to identify determinants of outcome so that the appropriate
changes to the treatment protocols can be made. In the area of donor insemination,
this process should also include a comparative assessment of donor sperm samples
obtained from different sperm banks. The regulations provided by Health Canada has
significantly improved donor screening and testing so that recipients of donor sperm
can be assured that the sample they receive is safe. However, it is important for
clinics providing the service to ensure that pregnancy outcomes are maximized by
evaluating predictor variables and comparing the effectiveness of sperm samples
obtained from different sperm banks. Two of the articles featured in this section
address this process with beneficial results. Article 1
